Why I Switched from Angular to React: A Developer Journey
A candid reflection on moving from Angular to React - exploring JavaScript philosophy, dependency injection patterns, and debunking the "enterprise framework" myth with real-world comparisons.
I was wrong.
For years, I defended Angular like it was my programming religion. I’d argue with React developers about type safety, built-in features, and “proper” architecture. But somewhere along the way, as I wrote more React code, something shifted. It wasn’t a single moment—it was a gradual realization that hit me harder than any framework debate ever could.
I didn’t want to learn a framework’s version of JavaScript. I wanted to use JavaScript.
The Directive Question That Changed Everything
Here’s what started to bother me: Why do we need custom syntax for things JavaScript already does?
Angular’s Approach (Old and New)

Here’s the irony: Even Angular itself is moving away from *ngIf syntax. Angular 17 introduced the @if block syntax, essentially admitting the old way was too complex. But my question remains: if JavaScript has if, ternaries, map(), and filter(), why invent new ones?
React’s answer is simple: it doesn’t. It trusts you to use the language.
Understanding Angular’s Design Philosophy: Why Custom Syntax?
Before dismissing Angular’s approach as unnecessary complexity, it’s worth understanding why the Angular team made these design choices. Based on research from Angular team discussions and framework comparisons, there are legitimate technical and organizational reasons for custom syntax.
The Cost of JavaScript Directly
When you use *ngIf, Angular doesn’t just hide elements with CSS—it completely removes them from the DOM. When the condition changes back to true, Angular rebuilds the entire component tree. This has performance implications:
- DOM rebuilding cost: Complete destruction and recreation is resource-intensive for complex components
- Change detection overhead: Angular’s zone.js system tracks these changes globally
- Memory management: Destroyed components are garbage collected, recreated ones allocate fresh memory
Compare this to React’s approach where {condition && <Component />} leverages the Virtual DOM diffing algorithm to minimize actual DOM operations.
Why Angular Chooses Custom Syntax
Angular’s philosophy centers on several key principles:
1. Separation of Concerns
Templates remain declarative HTML that designers and non-programmers can work with. The syntax *ngIf="condition" reads more like natural language than {condition && <Component />}.
2. Structural Directive Power
A single *ngIf syntax handles multiple behaviors behind the scenes:
- Template creation and destruction
- Component lifecycle management
- Change detection integration
- ng-template wrapping (implicit microsyntax)
3. Type Checking in Templates Angular templates can be type-checked at compile time using the Angular Language Service. This provides IDE autocomplete and catches errors before runtime.
4. One Way to Do Things
Enforced patterns reduce decision fatigue in large teams. There’s no debate about ternaries vs && vs if/else blocks—everyone uses *ngIf or @if.
The Real Trade-offs
However, these benefits come with costs:
Learning Curve Tax Developers must learn framework-specific syntax on top of JavaScript. A junior dev needs to understand:

- Still avoiding pure JavaScript in favor of block-based custom syntax

According to Angular’s official documentation and team blog posts, the new control flow syntax aims to be “more intuitive, performant, and easier to read.” The @if/@for blocks:

But they’re still not JavaScript. They’re Angular’s interpretation of what control flow should look like in templates.
The Philosophical Divide

Angular’s bet: Custom syntax provides better tooling, consistency, and guardrails for large teams React’s bet: JavaScript is already good enough—don’t reinvent it
Neither is objectively “wrong.” But for me, React’s philosophy aligns better with how I want to write code: using the language itself, not a framework’s dialect.
The One Thing I Actually Missed: Dependency Injection
I’ll be honest—Angular’s DI system is brilliant. When I first switched to React, I genuinely missed it.

The difference? Angular does it with decorators and framework magic. React does it with closures and objects. Both work. But React’s is just… JavaScript.
The Full Power of the Language
This realization cascaded into everything:
- Async handling: Angular has the
asyncpipe; React usesasync/awaitdirectly - Reactive state: Angular requires RxJS everywhere; React uses native Promises (RxJS is optional)
- Form validation: Angular has template-driven and reactive forms; React uses HTML5 validation or any library you want

I didn’t want to learn “Angular’s way of doing async.” I wanted to use JavaScript’s way.
Let’s Talk About the “Angular is for Enterprise” Myth
Here’s where I need to challenge conventional wisdom: The idea that Angular is better for enterprise is marketing, not technical reality.
Let me show you the actual data from 2026 enterprise adoption:
React Powers the Largest Enterprises:

- Netflix - Global streaming at massive scale with Next.js/React

If React wasn’t “enterprise-ready,” would these companies trust it with their core platforms?

But here’s the key: Angular isn’t better for enterprise—it’s better for teams that prefer opinionated frameworks. That’s a preference, not a technical superiority.
React’s Enterprise Advantages (2026 comparison):
- ✅ Larger talent pool Faster hiring, quicker onboarding
- ✅ Flexibility Choose your own architecture based on actual needs
- ✅ Innovation velocity Access to latest patterns and tools
- ✅ Virtual DOM performance Excels in highly interactive UIs

For me, React’s philosophy won: JavaScript’s full power, not a framework-specific dialect. The “enterprise” argument didn’t hold up against the evidence.
The Question That Matters
So here’s what I’m curious about: Do framework abstractions help or hinder?
- Angular devs: What patterns are worth the learning curve? What keeps you there?
- React devs: Do you ever miss Angular’s built-in features?
- Framework-agnostic folks: Is “just use JavaScript” actually better, or am I romanticizing simplicity?
I changed my mind once. I’m open to changing it again.
